Self description

Male , 29

I am Mo, a penultimate year computing student in London, and a Student Member of the British Computer Society.
I have been living in London for quite some time now, I have learnt a lot of things very early in my life, and I feel lucky that I had – and I am still having – the opportunity to be in a situation where I can understand the saying “what does not kill you makes you stronger”.
I do not like change in general, but I need variety in many things I do. I consider myself to be quite open-minded, yet with strong views on many issues.

Life experiences

You are not living alone on this planet, you need people, people need you, learn how to interact with them. You always need communication skills whether you are a college student or the prime minister. Communication skills is one of the most important things that I am – and will always be – learning, and day by day I better understand how people skills can change one’s life.

The big blur picture

A little example: Being a computing student, I always read about the computing industry and its latest news and trends, but what I enjoy the most is not the ‘cool stuff’ that companies produce, rather, I enjoy reading about things that can affect the economy, people and so on. The reason behind this is that I attempt to understand the longer term impact of things.
What I am trying to say is, try to be clever and extract information from where ever possible, this habit will help you later on when you go to the real world and ‘face the music’. Learn how to plan, organise and priorities things.
Always try to understand things around you, sometimes you face vague situations and you think that you are stuck, well sometimes the big picture can be really blur, look at it anyway.

If you are looking for a great career in an area where you need to be really responsible, then learn how to be precise, how to lead, how to influence, and most importantly, how to do all this and yet be yourself.
From personal experience, I have learnt very early in my life a few of the basic survival skills that one would need if they want a great career in a very competitive world, yet not compromise one’s ethical grounds. For instance, I have learnt that wishing to be or to have something is not enough, you must work hard to get what you want, and that in many cases means that you need to give something away in return. The trick is managing this and still be the winner.

Why mentor on horsesmouth?

One of the main reasons is that helping people is great, it is even greater when you help people to make the most of their time and learn something new. Personally, I have been advised about many things very early in my life, and today I find all what I have been advised about in the past applicable today... I want to share what I know with others, and really spread the ward.

I am very lucky to have found your website. Recently I wrote about a problem which I face very often.... There were 10 responses from 10 mentors. They have really explained to me and made me understand that I do not have any problem. Your services are wonderful and I am very much thankful to all of you.

I have been mentoring on HM for 18 months. I really enjoy it & hopefully I am helping other people. Recently I posted my my first 'request for a mentor'. I have been completely bowled over by the response. So many people taking their time & making the effort to offer constructive advice in a friendly polite manner. For me it completely validates the intent behind HM. It reminds me how many good, helpful people there are out there. Thanks for providing such a great service.
'I called out for mentor assistance a week or so ago.

I have been inundated with unbelievably helpful replies, and now have a toolkit to draw on to start turning around behaviours and mind-sets that have been detrimental in my life.

I just want to thank Horsesmouth and all the amazing people who reached out to me.  Each and every one of you has given me something to think about, and some have given me heaps of material with which to start working.  Now I need to do the work! Thank you so much!'
