Self description

Male , 38

My name is Andy. I live and work in Leeds (England's Milan) with my girlfriend who is a schoolteacher and confirmed TV addict. I spend my working hours trying to make students take responsibility for the activities that they want to run and supporting the staff that help them do that. Which I've taken to seeing as being a bit like a director in a movie or a play - arranging the environment and then trying to coax the best possible performance out of my actors (to stretch that analogy to near breaking point). I like tons and tons of stuff - much too numerous to name here. And I do tons of stuff. There are many legs to my table. When I'm not blogging, making art, taking our lass to dinner, or working in the Union at Leeds, I spend the other hours playing stupid computer games, reading and reading and reading. Occasionally I sleep. I'm getting older so the occasions and length of each is increasing. Who knows what will happen when I hit 30.

Life experiences

Management (particularly of Volunteers)

Working in a Students' Union environment for the past 8 years has given me some real hard knowledge of dealing with volunteers, handling change, setting a vision and continually motivating a staff team. I'm a member of the Chartered Institute of Management (and I've got the letters after my name to prove it) and have a continual thirst for knowledge on all of the subjects that surround it. I think I'm be particularly useful for young managers or guys who are coming into a management position for the first time and how you handle some of the challenges.

Mental Health

I've had some ups and downs over the years - mainly caused by stressing myself too much and expecting too much of myself. I've also worked in a welfare environment before and done some volunteering in this area. But I think its my personal experiences that might be most useful.

Anything else

I've got keen interests in Sport, Art, Film, Music and the internet which converge elsewhere. So any advice or thoughts you want on any of that stuff let me know. Working in an environment (Student Activities) where I come into contact with all types of activity (from sports teams, through political and campaigning groups, through real ale appreciators, to community volunteering) means that I have built up some knowledge in a number of random areas.
From a life experience point of view, I've had good and bad relationships, know the difficulties of living with someone you love but whose habits sometimes drive you bananas, dealt with the deaths of close relatives and helped my friends come through stuff they've had problems with.
Just don't ask me any questions about kids.
At least not until I've had some.

Why mentor on horsesmouth?

Everyone's been through some things that they feel they could help others with. I'm joining because whilst there's some stuff I know I can help others with, I still find the world an absolutely bewildering place sometimes and it would be nice if someone could give me some answers! From a professional point of view, I can see this being a really useful tool in terms of creating a space to share information with other managers and students.

I am very lucky to have found your website. Recently I wrote about a problem which I face very often.... There were 10 responses from 10 mentors. They have really explained to me and made me understand that I do not have any problem. Your services are wonderful and I am very much thankful to all of you.

I have been mentoring on HM for 18 months. I really enjoy it & hopefully I am helping other people. Recently I posted my my first 'request for a mentor'. I have been completely bowled over by the response. So many people taking their time & making the effort to offer constructive advice in a friendly polite manner. For me it completely validates the intent behind HM. It reminds me how many good, helpful people there are out there. Thanks for providing such a great service.
'I called out for mentor assistance a week or so ago.

I have been inundated with unbelievably helpful replies, and now have a toolkit to draw on to start turning around behaviours and mind-sets that have been detrimental in my life.

I just want to thank Horsesmouth and all the amazing people who reached out to me.  Each and every one of you has given me something to think about, and some have given me heaps of material with which to start working.  Now I need to do the work! Thank you so much!'
