Self description

Female , 29

I graduated from University in summer 2009 with a 2:1 (with honours) in Childhood Studies. I took up a place on a PGCE Early Years (leading to QTS) course in September, but unfortunately had to defer, due to injury.

I spent my summer at a US Summer Camp - BEST EXPERIENCE EVER! Know my way around the visa system and other things, so feel free to bend my ear :)

I've gained a number of GCSE's and an Outdoor Pursuit qualification at the same time. Moving onto A'Levels at Sixth Form, I took 4 A'Levels. Alongside my AS Levels I was a student teacher aid, whilst during A2, I was a library assistant at the school library.

Within all that, I've had a number of placements in the area of children, either working directly with them or the behalf of them. All the jobs and placements I have had, have been on a volunteer basis which is a mystery to some people but I enjoy it!!

As to where I am heading with all this: As I've told the careers advisors many-a-time - Not a clue!

Life experiences

GCSE'S, A'Levels and Uni

Whether your not sure whether to continue in education or not. Whether your not sure what subjects you want to take if you have decided to stay and continue education.

It could be time and planning for exams - How to cope? Other types of school pressure?
- I've been there and still am.

Family Tensions

Living in a fractured family where its often hard to keep track of each other, let alone whose not talking to who - Distance, past experiences and present grudges all have their roles to play and unfortunately the next generation are suffering: Not knowing their grandparents or elder siblings.

Growing up in such an environment can be lonely.

US Summer Camp

I spent my summer of 2009 working in a US summer camp, before travelling around the East Coast of the USA.

If you need advice to decide whether to do it, visas, expectations, experiences etc....I'm here :)

Why mentor on horsesmouth?

My motivation for joining horsemouth is to help those seeking advise from a support network which will always be here - An opportunity I never had. Giving something I never had may seem odd, but as this site allows mentors to receive advice as well as give it, it will too aid me. This is a good idea for mentoring as I feel that the support networks that usually surround a person, whether it be their friends or family etc, are not always as good as we wish to be, or because some people feel talking to a stranger is easier than talking to someone they know - Maybe its fear, or maybe they wish to seek an unbiased/differing perspective than from what they are used to receiving. Online communities are important and people even in the online world can feel valued because of the support they receive or the acheivements they create/make for themselves online, or out in the real-world. They do say that the written word has a lot of power and this also applies here.

I am very lucky to have found your website. Recently I wrote about a problem which I face very often.... There were 10 responses from 10 mentors. They have really explained to me and made me understand that I do not have any problem. Your services are wonderful and I am very much thankful to all of you.

I have been mentoring on HM for 18 months. I really enjoy it & hopefully I am helping other people. Recently I posted my my first 'request for a mentor'. I have been completely bowled over by the response. So many people taking their time & making the effort to offer constructive advice in a friendly polite manner. For me it completely validates the intent behind HM. It reminds me how many good, helpful people there are out there. Thanks for providing such a great service.
'I called out for mentor assistance a week or so ago.

I have been inundated with unbelievably helpful replies, and now have a toolkit to draw on to start turning around behaviours and mind-sets that have been detrimental in my life.

I just want to thank Horsesmouth and all the amazing people who reached out to me.  Each and every one of you has given me something to think about, and some have given me heaps of material with which to start working.  Now I need to do the work! Thank you so much!'
