Self description

Female , 41

As a teenager I missed quite a bit of my A-levels due to suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME which was isolating when all my friends were out having fun. I was told by one doctor that I would never be fit enough to leave the house which I found extremely frustrating. So with the support of family and friends and sheer determination I managed to do my A-levels in an intensive year and studied Psychology at uni. Then I had to have 3 benign tumours removed in 6 years which was scary.

I wasn't sure what I wanted to do next so worked for a football club in charge of all matchday staff. I have then worked for a number of charities.

I have also taken time off work to look after my nephew when he was young and later to support friends through difficult times and to care for a grandparent who had dementia.

I am now hoping to return to my studies and train as a psychologist.

Life experiences

Health problems

Having had Chronic Fatigue/ME which put my life on hold and was obviously a scary time I know I am able to support others going through similar issues as I can understand more than most how they are feeling due to the illness as well as the consequential isolation.

I have also got a number of friends who have mental health issues and so I am constantly learning about this and supporting them which I am sure would be transferable to here.

I have cared for someone who had a stroke and developed dementia and seen others support ill relatives and know how draining and frustrating this can be.

I have recruited a couple of hundred staff in my various roles so I can help you with ideas for your application forms and interviews.

I often train colleagues in becoming more organised and efficient in the office so would be happy to share my tips and tools.

I am a real believer in gaining and maintaining a work-life balance and would be happy to encourage you to do the same.

I have worked with bullies and difficult people so can help you to deal with them in a constructive way that is hopefully not draining for you.

I know all about career changes and how frustrating it is to not be sure what you want to do next or how to get there if you do so can work with you to get you in to your dream role.

I also know about people management and have always received excellent feedback from my staff on this. Basically I believe in treating people how I would like to be treated and will always encourage my staff to gain new skills and confidence.

Where would we be without our friends? Well most of the time life would be a lot harder and less fun but sometimes our friends can hurt and frustrate us and that can be really damaging.

I strongly believe our friends are so important. It is a real 2 way process though obviously you shouldn't help others just so they can help you. Being a true friend is the best gift you can give anyone and be lucky enough to receive. However because real friends are so precious they are often hard to find but I think I can offer suggestions if you are feeling a bit lonely or frustrated with the ones you have.

Why mentor on horsesmouth?

I always try and mentor others where I can whether this be at work or in my personal life. I was lucky enough to be supported by a mentor when I was first ill, it was so helpful to speak to someone who could understand how I was feeling but who could show that there is light at the end of the dark tunnel. Over the years I have been asked by friends to mentor other Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME sufferers and I have been a mentor on a young people's project which I found incredibly rewarding and so would like to do more of this. I am waiting to start a new volunteering opportunity and thought I'd try online mentoring in the meantime. People always come to when they have a problem and want me to help them work through things and find a solution which I enjoy doing. I love nurturing and encouraging others to fulfill their potential and have a bit more self belief, something I think we can all do with a mentor for throughout our lives.

I am very lucky to have found your website. Recently I wrote about a problem which I face very often.... There were 10 responses from 10 mentors. They have really explained to me and made me understand that I do not have any problem. Your services are wonderful and I am very much thankful to all of you.

I have been mentoring on HM for 18 months. I really enjoy it & hopefully I am helping other people. Recently I posted my my first 'request for a mentor'. I have been completely bowled over by the response. So many people taking their time & making the effort to offer constructive advice in a friendly polite manner. For me it completely validates the intent behind HM. It reminds me how many good, helpful people there are out there. Thanks for providing such a great service.
'I called out for mentor assistance a week or so ago.

I have been inundated with unbelievably helpful replies, and now have a toolkit to draw on to start turning around behaviours and mind-sets that have been detrimental in my life.

I just want to thank Horsesmouth and all the amazing people who reached out to me.  Each and every one of you has given me something to think about, and some have given me heaps of material with which to start working.  Now I need to do the work! Thank you so much!'
