Self description

Female , 27

i am an 18year old female, currently doing an a-level in photography. i hope to go to college soon to do a course in youth work to help me achieve my dream of being a youth worker and also to work with young offenders.
although i can be quite loud, i have been told that i am a natural listener an that i can be told things in confidence. i use these qualities to my advantage and help people with their problems when i can.
basically.. im better at helping with some situations than others, but i will do my best to be of help no matter what the situation.
something i strongly believe in.. "what doesnt kill you will make you stronger".

Life experiences

clash of culture/religion.

being born in england to bangladeshi parents who follow the muslim religion has always been difficult because to those of you who dont know, you are expected to follow the religion as well. although i believe in some aspects of the muslim faith, i would not class myself as a practising muslim. because of the judgemental views of some of the bengali/muslim community i feel that i have been limited in living my life the way i want to in fear of being seen and then spoken about as if i am doing something wrong. my parents are more easy-going then alot of muslim parents i have come across.. so in that sense i guess i am luckier then most. the way i look at it is there is no point in dwelling on it, so i just try to make the most of a difficlut situation.

during my life i have been let down a number of times by people i thought i could trust. from this i have learnt that there is only a small number of people in each of our lives that we can trust, and even then i think that the only person you can trust 100% is yourself. as a result of this, i do tend to think too much into peoples motives. however id prefer be overly wary of people rather than have people around me who turn out to be fake.

being an asian girl, i have black hair, brown skin.. the typical asian features. i think that being different to the majority either works in your favour or against you. fortunatley, in my life it has generally worked in my favour. however, there have been some situations where it has not.. especially around the time of september 11th. people have looked at me and without getting to know me first have straight away assumed that because i have asian features, i must be a muslim, therefore i must be a terrorist. it goes back to the old saying.. "dont judge a book by its cover". although i am not a practising muslim, and im not trying to preach, i will say that islam is a religion of peace. nowhere in the quran (holy book) does it tell muslims to kill innocent people as some terrorists state. these people are not muslims, and give the rest of the muslim community a bad name. finally, dont let people change who you are, just be yourself.. its the best way! who wants to be the same as evreyone else anyway?!

I am very lucky to have found your website. Recently I wrote about a problem which I face very often.... There were 10 responses from 10 mentors. They have really explained to me and made me understand that I do not have any problem. Your services are wonderful and I am very much thankful to all of you.

I have been mentoring on HM for 18 months. I really enjoy it & hopefully I am helping other people. Recently I posted my my first 'request for a mentor'. I have been completely bowled over by the response. So many people taking their time & making the effort to offer constructive advice in a friendly polite manner. For me it completely validates the intent behind HM. It reminds me how many good, helpful people there are out there. Thanks for providing such a great service.
'I called out for mentor assistance a week or so ago.

I have been inundated with unbelievably helpful replies, and now have a toolkit to draw on to start turning around behaviours and mind-sets that have been detrimental in my life.

I just want to thank Horsesmouth and all the amazing people who reached out to me.  Each and every one of you has given me something to think about, and some have given me heaps of material with which to start working.  Now I need to do the work! Thank you so much!'
