Self description

Female , 38

Hello, I'm Alexandra, I'm in my 30s and have personal experience of an eating disorder for over 14 years. I've also supported a friend with an eating disorder. I have lots of experience of supporting those with eating and food difficulties, including: working as a Mentor for an eating disorder charity; as Project Manager for an eating disorder organisation' conducting online meetings; facilitating weekly face-to-face support groups for those with eating disorders; and providing an information service to both carers and sufferers. I 've previously being involved in academic research into anorexia, and recently conducted a study about the value of support groups in eating disorders. I'm Founder and Editor of The Voice: support and education magazine for eating disorders, and have written articles about eating disorders. I have completed undergraduate and postgraduate training in psychology, clinical hypnotherapy, counselling and professional stress management consultancy.

Life experiences

Eating Disorders

I have personal experience of an eating disorder and of recovery, meaning that I can offer lots of support to those facing similar difficulties. I've also supported other people with such difficulties: in face-to-face situations; in groupwork; as a mentor; in academia; and as a friend. I have a lot of knowledge about eating disorders. I'm happy to provide both support and information about eating disorders. I feel receiving from people who have had similar experiences is very valuable and helpful. Often clinical/medical professionals don't really understand what it's like to have an eating disorder. This can leave the sufferer feeling alone, isolated or misunderstood. I feel I can offer valuable support because of my personal experience and because of my daily work with many people struggling with such difficulties. I am patient, understanding and non-judgemental. I feel strongly about helping those struggling with dysfunctional food and eating thoughts and behaviours.

Depression

I also have personal experience of major clinical expression and have experienced various types of therapy as a result. I feel I can provide support, understanding and a listening ear. I understand how difficult depression can be and the impact it can have on one's life. I hate when people say 'pull your socks up' as if depression is easy to get over. Depression can be very debilitating, as it was for me, and I feel I can empathise and understand many of the experiences others who have experienced depression, may be going through.

I am very lucky to have found your website. Recently I wrote about a problem which I face very often.... There were 10 responses from 10 mentors. They have really explained to me and made me understand that I do not have any problem. Your services are wonderful and I am very much thankful to all of you.

I have been mentoring on HM for 18 months. I really enjoy it & hopefully I am helping other people. Recently I posted my my first 'request for a mentor'. I have been completely bowled over by the response. So many people taking their time & making the effort to offer constructive advice in a friendly polite manner. For me it completely validates the intent behind HM. It reminds me how many good, helpful people there are out there. Thanks for providing such a great service.
'I called out for mentor assistance a week or so ago.

I have been inundated with unbelievably helpful replies, and now have a toolkit to draw on to start turning around behaviours and mind-sets that have been detrimental in my life.

I just want to thank Horsesmouth and all the amazing people who reached out to me.  Each and every one of you has given me something to think about, and some have given me heaps of material with which to start working.  Now I need to do the work! Thank you so much!'
