Self description

Male , 45

I always wanted to work in the media from a very early age, in fact I was 11 when I visited my first television studio at TV-am in London. I was hooked from that moment on! At the age of 17, I was offered a clerical job at the BBC and it has been one long learning curve ever since! I became a Researcher in the BBC newsroom, before moving on to BBC Presentation to become an Assistant Producer. In August 2005, I moved to Red Bee Media and continued producing trails and promotions for BBC channels. More recently, I am on a 6 month secondment as a Promotions Producer on Community Channel, which is part of the Media Trust. I really enjoy working in Television, but I do also have some experience in Radio as a freelance Travel News Presenter for BBC London 94.9FM.

Life experiences

Research

I am a trained BBC researcher. It's all about knowing your sources and time management and I think I'm pretty good at both.

Organised

I am quite an organised person in that I manage my emails into folders, and paperwork is filed away and not left in a pile on my desk. Being a good researcher, means someone who is able to get an answer to a question quickly, but being acccurate too.

Knowledge of the industry

I read Broadcast magazine and other periodicals and websites to keep up-to-date on the developments affecting the industry I work in. Technology is changing fast, so it's not always easy to keep up!

Why mentor on horsesmouth?

Progressing in Television is not always easy, and sometimes I have found it difficult to find the right person to help me move onwards and upwards. They say it's "who you know" in the media and I would agree with that. So if I can help someone who is in the same position I was years ago, then great.

I am very lucky to have found your website. Recently I wrote about a problem which I face very often.... There were 10 responses from 10 mentors. They have really explained to me and made me understand that I do not have any problem. Your services are wonderful and I am very much thankful to all of you.

I have been mentoring on HM for 18 months. I really enjoy it & hopefully I am helping other people. Recently I posted my my first 'request for a mentor'. I have been completely bowled over by the response. So many people taking their time & making the effort to offer constructive advice in a friendly polite manner. For me it completely validates the intent behind HM. It reminds me how many good, helpful people there are out there. Thanks for providing such a great service.
'I called out for mentor assistance a week or so ago.

I have been inundated with unbelievably helpful replies, and now have a toolkit to draw on to start turning around behaviours and mind-sets that have been detrimental in my life.

I just want to thank Horsesmouth and all the amazing people who reached out to me.  Each and every one of you has given me something to think about, and some have given me heaps of material with which to start working.  Now I need to do the work! Thank you so much!'
