playful , serious , fascinated
I am a musician, writer, theorist and activist. I'm 43 years old, a father of two daughters, divorced from a wife, with a new partner - my biological children in Scotland, my partner and her child in London, and I divide my life between the two... with reasonable success. I am a singer in a band, I write articles and books, I enjoy (and sometimes get paid for) theories about society, culture and technology, and I'm interested in lasting, democratic social change.
I've been through so many creative industries - newspapers, new media, television, radio, music, advertising, research, academia - that I think I know what the common skills and capacities are that you need to survive (and thrive, if you lucky) in each.
Something I've given a lot of thought and effort to, and which requires a 'network' mentality these days - ie, we have to be creative about how we maintain connections to those we love and care for, and even those we once loved and cared for.
I've been in this for 20 years, and I think I know some of the ground rules by now. But it's a new landscape for musicians, in the digital age - and I'm currently trying to figure out a model for myself, that may be useful to others.
I like the idea of being available for a few hours a week to share my practical knowledge and wisdom with others who might benefit from it. My explicit interest is in those who don't want to (or who stop wanting to) live a classic, Monday-to-Friday, work-to-consume life. To step away from that is to move into choppy waters: a playful, creative life which can be exciting and propulsive, but can also drown you if you don't know how to steer your course. I feel that our society knows how to look after workers, but not how to look after *players*. I hope that Horse's Mouth can give me some direct sense of being able to do that, and maybe inspire others in my position to do the same.
