Self description

Female , 26

20yrs old- nearly 21, eep! After struggling through school due to severe anxiety I now work in a primary school as a fully qualified pre-school assistant and playworker- I absolutely love my job. I adore my family, we're very close knit- i currently still live with my parents, older sister, and younger brother. In my spare time I enjoy photography, walks, and generally just unwinding! :)

Life experiences

Throughout my school life I suffered with a severe anxiety about being in classrooms- the feeling of being shut in was claustrophobic and utterly draining. In high school I felt as if itconquered me- I was being physically sick with anxiety before most lessons and found it a real struggle to attend every day- despite being academically 'bright'. In yr 11 I started attending a special Teaching Unit alongside school- the small classes and understanding staff did me the WORLD of good. I completed 7 GCSES, 5 of which were C or above. For me this was a huge achievement. At 16 I enrolled with a training provider to study childcare (four years later and I'm back studying a more advanced course :D). I had a very caring Art teacher who offered to tutor me in Art & Photography after school hours to achieve 2 A Levels. I thoroughly enjoyed this, that teacher was an inspiration. I now work full time, drive, and have "blossomed!" I am now in control of my life and anxiety free. It IS possible. :)

Further education

After struggling through GCSEs due to anxiety, I really wanted to study Childcare but was terrified that my anxiety would prevent this. I spoke to all the course providers in my area and found the one that best suited me- I explained about issues I've had in school environments and they were very kind and understanding, without being patronizing. They allowed me to do classwork independently without needing to attend the classes, which was perfect for me. I thoroughly enjoyed the course, and my assessor was lovely! I'm proud that despite my fears I did this course, and a couple of years later I'm doing the next level up! Anyone can do ANYTHING- you don't have to fit in the 'normal' box, most people will support you and help you succeed- all you have to do is ask.

Why mentor on horsesmouth?

I want to join horsemouth to reassure others who, like myself, may have suffered with anxiety that it IS possible to overcome it and live a happy life. When I was going through a tough time in education I would have liked to have heard someone's 'success story' to reassure me that I wasn't the only person in the world going through it. This kind of mentoring is brilliant, it's perfect for people who may not want help face-to-face, it allows them to keep anonymity yet still get the help and advice they want.

I am very lucky to have found your website. Recently I wrote about a problem which I face very often.... There were 10 responses from 10 mentors. They have really explained to me and made me understand that I do not have any problem. Your services are wonderful and I am very much thankful to all of you.

I have been mentoring on HM for 18 months. I really enjoy it & hopefully I am helping other people. Recently I posted my my first 'request for a mentor'. I have been completely bowled over by the response. So many people taking their time & making the effort to offer constructive advice in a friendly polite manner. For me it completely validates the intent behind HM. It reminds me how many good, helpful people there are out there. Thanks for providing such a great service.
'I called out for mentor assistance a week or so ago.

I have been inundated with unbelievably helpful replies, and now have a toolkit to draw on to start turning around behaviours and mind-sets that have been detrimental in my life.

I just want to thank Horsesmouth and all the amazing people who reached out to me.  Each and every one of you has given me something to think about, and some have given me heaps of material with which to start working.  Now I need to do the work! Thank you so much!'
