Self description

Female , 33

I'm 26 and work at an Independent boarding school where I work as a boarding housemistress and also in the marketing department. I studied at Sheffield University and have a 2.1 BA Honours in History and a Masters in Historical Research. I have a 10 month old Golden Retriever and he takes up most of my time. I love dogs, horses and pigs! I write fiction and enjoy reading and am currently reading all the books I should have read by now but haven't! I'm in a relationship with a wonderful man who keeps me sane when work gets stressful. I am looking to change career at the moment and have just started a CIW course so I can move into Website Design. I love film and theatre and go to the cinema once a week which means I get to see great movies and some really awful ones too! I love cooking and eating out, especially French food. I am a passionate person who is very loyal to her friends, I'm a great listener, a skill I have inherited from my mother, and hope that I can help you.

Life experiences

I am a suffer of depression. I was first diagnosed when I was in my early 20s at university. Now I can regonise the signs and can stop myself from falling completely. If you feel lonely, anxious, depressed or confused I can offer comfort. I am a successful career woman with a loving boyfriend and a beautiful dog. Depression doesn't have to rule you. Knowing that there are people out there who suffer has helped me and I would like to help people like myself, cope with the black dog.

University/First job

I spent four years at university in total and had a great time. Having worked with 6th form since then I am pretty adept at giving information and advice regarding going to university. And life beyond university. I seperated from the love of my life, got amazing dissertation marks, failed essays, got my first job, was bullied, and survived, and made friends for life. Advice from coping with exam stress to how to budget for food and fun, I am living proof that if you are bad with finances you can still have a great time at uni and not come out too poor!

Growing up in a Vicarage with a father who is a Vicar and a mother who is a Priest I was bullied quite badly at school, both for my name and because of what my parents did for a living. I learnt to stand up for myself though and with a group of true friends and very supportive teachers I made it through the agonising experience. I can comment and advise on bullying/loneliness and how to stop being a victim and take control.

Why mentor on horsesmouth?

I think online mentoring is a brilliant idea. The notion of being able to log on and ask any question of someone you don't know is as invaluable as it is ingenious. Sometimes it is so much harder to ask difficult questions of people you know for fear of being judged or losing their respect/friendship. Hear you can speak to people who will be able to empathise and advise but wont know you thus removing that worry. I have always wanted to be an elder sister so I could help and advise younger siblings, I have an elder brother who has always helped me and being a mentor gives me that chance to do for others what he did for me. I have only been able to choose three topics to offer 'expert' advice on, but I welcome questions about anything and everything. This is a fantastic opportunity for me to pass on experience and advice and had the internet been more prevelant when I was a teenager I would have loved something like Horsesmouth an opportunity to seek advice and retain anonymity.

I am very lucky to have found your website. Recently I wrote about a problem which I face very often.... There were 10 responses from 10 mentors. They have really explained to me and made me understand that I do not have any problem. Your services are wonderful and I am very much thankful to all of you.

I have been mentoring on HM for 18 months. I really enjoy it & hopefully I am helping other people. Recently I posted my my first 'request for a mentor'. I have been completely bowled over by the response. So many people taking their time & making the effort to offer constructive advice in a friendly polite manner. For me it completely validates the intent behind HM. It reminds me how many good, helpful people there are out there. Thanks for providing such a great service.
'I called out for mentor assistance a week or so ago.

I have been inundated with unbelievably helpful replies, and now have a toolkit to draw on to start turning around behaviours and mind-sets that have been detrimental in my life.

I just want to thank Horsesmouth and all the amazing people who reached out to me.  Each and every one of you has given me something to think about, and some have given me heaps of material with which to start working.  Now I need to do the work! Thank you so much!'
