Realistic , Practical , Pragmatic
I am a mother of four grown up children with families of their own. I am now the proud grandmother of four soon to be five grandchildren. I have a background of working in retail management both as employed and self employed.I have studied with the Open University and have a BSc in Sociology and Education. I am a big believer in ongoing self development and to that end I have a Coaching Diploma and I have just completed my SFEDI award for business support. Coaching and mentoring are my passion and helping others to connect with the star within themselves is my goal when working with people on an individual level and on the business front. Maintaining a balance and enjoying life I see as essential. I am very much a realist, I work with people starting by looking at what the situation is now that they face. I adopt a very practical and pragmatic approach to the work I do. It is my firm belief that we are individuals that are unique with our skills, strengths, and talents.
I was self employed for many years and started a retail business on £108-33 maintainance cheque. This business at it's peak employed 15 staff many of whom I am still in contact with as they were more than just employees.
I am a big believer that you start with what you have and look at the opportunities for developing and growing a business whether it is yours or an employed postion. I took on a failing branch, and secured the staffs jobs and doubled the turnover on the first year and put forward plans to better utilise the floorspace. This when implemented added my predicted additional 30% to the turnover and was also implemented at other branches.
I know first hand the pitfalls of being self employed and getting out of balance and the knock on effect that it can have. I am a big believer in taking time to work on the business. A sucessful business should be able to be left for 6 mths without the owner. The policies, proceedures etc have to be firmly established for this reality.
This is very important as we all have the same amount of time to manage. Good time management is essntial to getting things done that we deem neccessary. In working with individuals I have come across brilliant avoidance strategies which meant that time was being wasted and objectives that had been highlighted were not being addressed so the individuals were self sabotaging their objectives.
How we manage our time effectively is dependant on what we are trying to cram into our lives and what we consider to be our highest priorities. It is essential to work on our top priorities first. After that to then work down the list of things to be done. Knowing what to delegate is a skill in its self. To me this is all important in retaining a balance in our lives. There is no point in being so driven in business or work that you have no time or energy for family life or relationships. Sucess without meaning and purpose is very hollow and does not result in us being the best that we can be.
In order to be the best that we can be we need to be true to ourselves, radiate that confidence of who we are, what we stand for, and what we are all about. In order to achieve this we need to be utilising the strengths, skills, talents, and natural abilities that we all posess. We have to tap in to everything that makes us the truly unique individuals that we all are. It is so easy to get out of balance when we are not using the elements that make us who we are. I find that if I do not take time out to be creative for example I start to loose joy and momentum. It is not selfish to make time for ourselves to develop our full potential. In doing so we are better to be around for those closest to us. Some of us spend far too long underachieveing because we do not fully explore who we really are and are afraid to take the time to seek and work out what we really want and need for us to function at our very best. Some of us are too afraid to say no, and make changes. Find your STAR within.
I am a firm believer in individuals being the best that they can be. None of us exist in isolation, we all need help in different areas. No one person has all the answers. Mentoring I have always found to be a very positive experience. It has been proven time and time again to be very benificial for both mentee and mentor. I just think that Horsesmouth is such a positive and brilliant idea and something that I am happy to be involved with. The gains for all involved is beyond measure. This way of working enables busy people to maximise valuable time, and get support and answers when needed.
