Self description

Male , 63

I am a 55 years young man who has been married and divorced. I have lived with my partner Teresa for the last 20 odd years or so. We have a 16 year old daughter called Jessica whose into her last years of school before she goes off to uni doing media studies. I was born disabled with cerebral palsy but one of the lucky ones as its effects do not thankfully cause me that much restriction of what I can achieve physically. I also suffer from depression and anxiety and have been on incapacity benefit because of these problems since 1997. I am heavily into music, music and more music (except MOR, hip pop and jazz that is!). My fave bands are too many to go into here but my number one is the Beatles. Its not only the fab music with them but they have touch me in some many other ways. Until I was dismissed from my last job in 1997 due to mental health problems I worked for a homeless charity here in Bedford from 1979 onwards.which I greatly enjoyed.

Life experiences

Cerebral palsy

Due to my life experiences to date I got some insight into the management of my disability.

Panic disorder, anxiety and depression.

While I am more than happy to hear and offer one off advice to new survivors I am equally looking to share experiences, mutual support by encouragement and friendship with long-term mentors and non mentors.

Homelessness, and homelessness campaigning, charitable fundraising.

I previously worked for a local homeless charity who provided accommodation projects for single women and men. I particularly enjoyed working alongside the people who came to reside there. I also have extensive insight in development of such charities and their funding requirements. I also have management experience as I was chair of a national homelessness charity. Both of these experiences also gave me insight into crisis management which is unfortunately common in the running of such charitable organizations - any useful advice I have gained along the way I will gladly pass on!

I feel I could also advise anyone who may be interested in volunteering, as it was through doing that that led to my career path and led to me being offered a salaried job working with the homeless.

Why mentor on horsesmouth?

My motivation for joining Horses mouth is simply that I enjoy social networking and the exchange of written information, thoughts and ideas of how to make things better - either for others or myself. Also there's a lot of personal experiences out there that I'd like to tap into to see if it can help me in my everyday life. To this end I am helping to establish an ongoing active all inclusive mental health self-help mutual support group for like minded interested existing mentors and non-mentors. In a similar vain I'm also helping to establish a Homelessness Campaign and Support Group. You can find details of these groups in my groups section. Be seeing you! Updated - February 2010

I am very lucky to have found your website. Recently I wrote about a problem which I face very often.... There were 10 responses from 10 mentors. They have really explained to me and made me understand that I do not have any problem. Your services are wonderful and I am very much thankful to all of you.

I have been mentoring on HM for 18 months. I really enjoy it & hopefully I am helping other people. Recently I posted my my first 'request for a mentor'. I have been completely bowled over by the response. So many people taking their time & making the effort to offer constructive advice in a friendly polite manner. For me it completely validates the intent behind HM. It reminds me how many good, helpful people there are out there. Thanks for providing such a great service.
'I called out for mentor assistance a week or so ago.

I have been inundated with unbelievably helpful replies, and now have a toolkit to draw on to start turning around behaviours and mind-sets that have been detrimental in my life.

I just want to thank Horsesmouth and all the amazing people who reached out to me.  Each and every one of you has given me something to think about, and some have given me heaps of material with which to start working.  Now I need to do the work! Thank you so much!'
