Self description

Female , 61

I'm 51 and not shy of sharing that fact. I wanted to be doctor when I left school and my efforts were thwarted by family cirumstances, so I had to leave Med. School at the end of 2 years. I then came back to UK (I've lived in different parts of Africa for 11 years), strangely got involved in Banking, took my banking exams, then took accounting exams so I was an ACIB and an ACMA, then I got involved in forensic accounting and joined the ICM (inst. of Credit Management), helped a blue chip company set up a new legal system , got into HR (personnel to us lesser mortals) became an HR Management Consultant and now I'm running my own business 'cos I'm now at the point in my life where I'd like to call the shots! Oh, in amongst that, I got married, had a baby, did an MBA, got divorced and then met the love of my life. Wow, that's the first time I've seen all that in black and white on the same piece of paper!!!!

Life experiences

Life Counsellor

I help people from all walks of life; I offer advice and help build self-esteem.

Careers Advisor

I help people with their careers, jobs and life problems.

Always a learner

It feels like I'm always looking for ways to extend my experience, but I do enjoy learning new things. But I like to use my common sense as well; I have a practical nature and I don't necessarily opt for the easy way out. Being a more mature person (in years), I have a lot of real life experiences to draw from: from being brought up in very strict Irish Catholic way (bearing punishments as a child that would have resulted in being taken into care if it happened now), to living, working and being educated abroad, to being married and divorced and being a single parent, to globe trotting, working for other people and hating it to starring my own business and finding the love of my life just in time. I am priviledged to have all these experiences because I pushed and motivated myself.

Why mentor on horsesmouth?

I have always been a mentor, it just happened without me even thinking about it. Without wishing to sound big headed (because I'm not!), everyone seems to single me out to talk to about whatever it might be that's bugging them. I suppose I'm a slightly more sphisticated Agony Aunt who doesn't have a newspaper or magazine column. In my job as a Career Consultant and through managing my own company, I mentor people all day long and I love it. I want to make a difference to someone's life, save them from making a bad mistake, put someone on the right track, make someone feel good about themselves, build someone's confidence after it has been broken. These are the reasons why I joined Horses Mouth, and I hope that whoever has a problem, whether it's career related, personal or something that doesn't seem to fit any hat, that they can contact me and allow me to help's free, there are no obligations and you are free to do whatever you want to do; maybe I can help steer you in the right direction?

I am very lucky to have found your website. Recently I wrote about a problem which I face very often.... There were 10 responses from 10 mentors. They have really explained to me and made me understand that I do not have any problem. Your services are wonderful and I am very much thankful to all of you.

I have been mentoring on HM for 18 months. I really enjoy it & hopefully I am helping other people. Recently I posted my my first 'request for a mentor'. I have been completely bowled over by the response. So many people taking their time & making the effort to offer constructive advice in a friendly polite manner. For me it completely validates the intent behind HM. It reminds me how many good, helpful people there are out there. Thanks for providing such a great service.
'I called out for mentor assistance a week or so ago.

I have been inundated with unbelievably helpful replies, and now have a toolkit to draw on to start turning around behaviours and mind-sets that have been detrimental in my life.

I just want to thank Horsesmouth and all the amazing people who reached out to me.  Each and every one of you has given me something to think about, and some have given me heaps of material with which to start working.  Now I need to do the work! Thank you so much!'
