I am a graphic designer and artist, born in Chile. I came to the UK as a refugee when I was two years old and grew up in Yorkshire. My family is still dealing with the consequences of our experience and I have been involved in supporting various family members. I have worked as a designer for 10 years following a Master's at the RCA. My art practice explores issues of identity and self expression and have worked for a number of charities including Shelter, UNICEF in Geneva for a couple of years, and Mencap – with people with a learning disability. I am currently in the process of switching to teaching design where I can use my skills of empathy and encouraging others to better effect. I have always been involved in sports and have learnt a great deal from challenges and rewards that various different sports provide. I have managed football teams and am a member of an urban running club which again draw out the skills of empathy, responsibility and determination.
10 years in the industry, MA, and wealth of experience in different roles from freelancer to in-house and small studio. Currently setting up a graphics studio for a landscape architecture practice. Had a range of successes as well as difficult times such as redundancy, so will be in good position to advise on a variety of career issues.
Spent time supporting my older brother in his struggle with depression, helping him access services, set goals, and setting up strategies for getting better and regaining confidence. Have had milder symptoms myself and have read a range of books to get to the bottom of things. Have also produced multi-media art involving interviews with friends and family members on a range of issues including eating disorders, anxiety and depression, and bereavement.
Supported my sister through a difficult time with her abusive ex-boyfriend. The effects on the family as a whole were really damaging and this put great strain on all involved, especially my parents. Did a lot of work to repair relationships and help my family process what was going on.
I have always been empathetic and supportive, a good listener, but not afraid to tell it like it is. I have been through a lot in my life - from losing my dad at a young age and moving to england and all the consequences of this. I have experienced the benefit of advice and support from friends and family and I am very happy to do the same for others. I hope I will be a caring and perceptive listener and that I will be able to draw upon my experience, learning and creativity to provide help for people who need it.
