Self description

Male , 54

Often described by others as caring, kind and patient - mostly worked in the retail sector specialising in T&D and consider myself to have a facilitative approach to learning. I am passionate about people, service and learning and do my best to combine all three and love to make a difference in all I do. I engage myself in what I do and love to take an active role in my career rather than just doing a job! I love to give as I believe that if you give you don’t need to take! As for direction I am currently researching a book on service which I want to do in a narrative style like Ken Blanchard. I believe that story telling is very much part of our culture and using what we know as a vehicle to do things differently with the aim of improving things is to me blissfully simple and also fun!

Life experiences

Service, service, service!

What I don’t know about service eh - passionate to the point of obsession, but some obsessions are good for you! I was fortunate enough to have worked for a small family business at an early age and that left an impression on me throughout my working and personal life.

Young people

I didn’t have any adult mentors in my early teenage years so when I had the opportunity to work with vulnerable young people I ended up doing 15 years voluntary work mostly in youth clubs but also outreach work and working in intervention programmes.

I have personal experience of this and can say it was an interesting, painful and insightful journey. My addiction is an odd one in that many people do not understand this particular spectrum of addictions. I became aware of my addiction very late in life and getting help was very difficult. The only agency I could contact did not respond so I have to use my network of close and understanding friends to come to terms with this and to develop a coping strategy. As a result of this I have wanted to set up a working and approachable agency for others like myself who hit the proverbial brick wall.

Why mentor on horsesmouth?

There is no shortage of selfish people in this world who egocentrism is painfully obvious for all to see. These people live on easy street and seem to think that life is all about what they can get for free and often at other people’s expense. My philosophy is very different. No one owes me anything. I know it’s easier to take than to give - I believe that taking is so endemic to some that they just don’t seem able or willing to give. For me it’s the opposite and I have been told that I give too much. I am not out to change the world all at once - just a little bit at a time by using my behaviours to influence others to show that it’s ok to give and that rewards are far greater when you give more so than anything else you can ever do for yourself!

I am very lucky to have found your website. Recently I wrote about a problem which I face very often.... There were 10 responses from 10 mentors. They have really explained to me and made me understand that I do not have any problem. Your services are wonderful and I am very much thankful to all of you.

I have been mentoring on HM for 18 months. I really enjoy it & hopefully I am helping other people. Recently I posted my my first 'request for a mentor'. I have been completely bowled over by the response. So many people taking their time & making the effort to offer constructive advice in a friendly polite manner. For me it completely validates the intent behind HM. It reminds me how many good, helpful people there are out there. Thanks for providing such a great service.
'I called out for mentor assistance a week or so ago.

I have been inundated with unbelievably helpful replies, and now have a toolkit to draw on to start turning around behaviours and mind-sets that have been detrimental in my life.

I just want to thank Horsesmouth and all the amazing people who reached out to me.  Each and every one of you has given me something to think about, and some have given me heaps of material with which to start working.  Now I need to do the work! Thank you so much!'
